When I do #BrandBeforeLogo work with my clients to get clarity around their brand messaging, I spend a lot of time helping them understand who their ideal clients are and what kind of transformation they deliver to them. Call it a ‘brand messaging before and after’.
Because understanding your customers is the absolute key to success. For marketing, for messaging, and for business success.
Here are some of the things I understand about people I help and what they struggle with and experience. Could you be in one of these camps?
People who have wasted time and money on marketing that hasn’t worked
I was recently asked whether I work mostly with start-ups. And while I do work with coaches, consultants and experts setting up from scratch (for example after leaving the corporate world), I work more often with people who have started a business and have been running it for a little while.
These business owners get in touch with me because they aren’t getting the traction or the success they deserve for their talents.
They started and got stuck.
And when they come to me, they are often in one of these two camps:
- Camp Try Hard.
- Camp Try it Tomorrow.
Let me explain what I mean.
Camp Try Hard
These are the people who are doing lots of stuff. They are action takers.
They’ve been putting themselves out there on social media, done their logo and colour palette, and set up their website.
They’re following tactical advice as hard as they can. Posting on social media, blogging, trying to get visible.
But their actions aren’t achieving the results they’d hoped for. And they’re not getting a return on their investments.
And they’re feeling frustrated and disillusioned with it all.
“When it this going to start working?”
“Why does it feel so hard?”
“Why aren’t people buying my stuff?”
They’ve wasted tons of time or money and their marketing wasn’t working. And their marketing wasn’t working because they weren’t clear enough on their offer, positioning, difference, and message.
Because they were unable to say what their ideal clients want to hear. They haven’t done the “Brand Discovery” work to understand the heart and soul of their brand and who it’s for in order to position themselves as the obvious choice to their ideal clients.
They’re still to find words that work. To get that clarity.
But they’re not the only ones who feel stuck.
Camp Try it Tomorrow
There are also business owners out there who feel stuck because they’re lacking clarity on their brand – who it’s for, their offer, positioning, difference and messaging. And as a result, they don’t feel they can take any action.
Because they know something is wrong. They’re just not able to clearly articulate the difference they make to their ideal clients, and they’re worried they might confuse everyone with their own confusion and un-do any small amount of progress they’ve made so far!
Because if you’re confusing customers, you’re losing customers.
They’re not feeling confident enough to take action due to this lack of clarity.
They’ve probably read almost everything on the internet and downloaded the “golden ticket” cheat sheet. They might even think they’ve done a “customer avatar”. But none of this will get them unstuck and solve their problem. They are literally feeling close to giving up.
What will solve their problem is working on foundational things like understanding themselves, understanding their customers, and bringing that together into something that positions them as the go-to person for their ideal clients.
Now, ‘Camp Try It Hard’ and ‘Camp Try it Tomorrow’ business owners are in slightly different places. But they’re all experiencing much of the same struggles. Wonder what they are?
What are they struggling with?
Tactics before strategy
When I set up my business a few years ago I saw many business owners struggling with self-promotion. There’s an overwhelming amount of tactics you could use in business. Email marketing funnels, social media, blogs, podcasts, and videos, etc. – take your pick.
The thing is though, in business, tactics come after strategy. People often try to put tactics into action and fail. And that’s because they haven’t done the pre-work (or foundations) required – the strategic work that would mean they are ready for the tactics!
And do you know why they struggle?
Because they need a deeper understanding of:
- ideal clients,
- brand positioning,
- and messaging.
They don’t know what to say and how to say it in a way that their ideal clients want to hear. They know they have talent. But their confidence is taking a knock due to not being able to explain their offer, why people should work with them, and what makes them different. The problem is, they’re too close to their business to work it all out.
And they need some help.
