Return on Investment, Marketing, Message, Messaging

What if I told you that there was ONE thing you could do that would guarantee you a MUCH BETTER Return on Investment (ROI) from your Marketing Budget?

Would you invest in it?

How do you think you would feel if you spent thousands on marketing your business this year, but it didn’t even bring in a profit?

Now imagine how you’d feel if you took the same budget, and quadrupled your profits?

Wouldn’t it be amazing to know that the marketing you’re putting out there was doing the best job it could, and absolutely brought you those ideal clients?

It’s a no-brainer.

Let me explain with a little story:

ROI, Messaging, Message, Marketing

Picture the scene, you’re in a big room full of people. Business Owners, Entrepreneurs, potential customers – they’re all there.

There’s a lot of hustle and bustle as people move around to chat with each other.

In the middle of the room, there are three people who stand out. They look pretty smart.

One’s wearing a black and gold jacket, one a lovely navy suit with silk necktie, the other one, a bright coral top.

And they’re all waving a flag up in the air.

Black and Gold’s flag looks pretty swish, but there are no words on it.

Navy’s flag has got a message on it, but it’s written in Greek so it’s pretty hard to understand.

Coral’s flag says – I can solve your problems and make you feel fabulous.

People are flocking towards coral.

They all want to talk to her.

‘Black and Gold’ is jealous of all the interest Coral is getting. He needs to do something about it. So he comes up with a plan.

He decides to pay £1000 to have people walk past him first.

All the potential customers are funneled past ‘Black and Gold’ – you know, a bit like he was coming up first in a google search.

The customers stop and look at him for a second. They look a bit confused. He waves his flag, but his flag has got nothing on it to make them want to stop so they move on.

They see Coral and Navy. Both of them look really approachable.

Navy’s flag looks nice, but the words are in Greek, a language these customers don’t understand, (or at least not well enough to know what it really means), so once more, people flock to Coral.

Coral has a lovely flag that says – very simply and clearly –  I can solve your problems and make you feel fabulous.

Be like Coral.

I’m sure you don’t need me to point out the moral of the story, but just in case there is any doubt, here’s the lesson.

If you haven’t got a clear and simple message, in a language that people can understand, they’ll go elsewhere.

You can have a beautiful fancy pants website, pay money for traffic and funnel people your way, but if your message isn’t connecting with them, if you haven’t got the right words – you lose.

It’s like waving a flag that’s got nothing on it!

Investing in your messaging is the clever thing to do.

It makes sure your marketing actually works!

Not investing time, thought and energy on your messaging is like waving a flag around with nothing on it:

Or building a website without the right message

Or creating a Facebook ad that nobody notices

– What’s the point of that?

All the money you invest in your marketing (after you’ve got the messaging right) is going to bring you back so much more return on investment (ROI).

And that, my friends, is how investing in your messaging gets you the best ROI from your marketing budget.

  1. This is such a good post. I have so many strings to my bow – that I actually need to work out which is the biggest string and use that on my flag. I am hoping that as I write a parenting course, that the key USP / catchy phrase will leap out at me. Fingers crossed. My friend has a new company called “My Confidence Matters” .
And now I need to find something as good as “My Family Matters”.

    1. Thank you Clare. I’m so glad you found it useful. Yes as you go through the process you might find a key phrase that sticks out as something that will really work for you and your audience. Happy to have a chat with you about it if that helps. 🙂
